AKEL has strongly criticised the Christodoulides government over its latest appointments to the boards of semi-governmental organisations, alleging the near-total exclusion of the Left.
The party also questioned whether certain appointments could involve incompatibilities or conflicts of interest, while accusing the government of undermining the role of the Advisory Council established to promote merit-based selections.
Advisory Council’s Role Questioned
AKEL said the government’s choices had effectively neutralised the Advisory Council’s role in the appointment process.
According to the party, the body presented as a safeguard for merit-based appointments has instead been used to legitimise selections that serve political considerations and party balances.
AKEL Alleges Exclusion of the Left
The party placed particular emphasis on what it described as the near-total exclusion of the Left from the new appointments.
AKEL argued that this contradicts the government’s commitments to meritocracy while limiting pluralism and democratic oversight within semi-governmental organisations.
Concerns over Possible Conflicts of Interest
AKEL also said questions had emerged following allegations of possible incompatibilities and conflicts of interest involving specific appointments.
The party accused the Christodoulides government of following the same political approach as the Anastasiades administration and DISY by treating public positions as political spoils.
“Semi-governmental organisations are not the spoils of whichever government is in power,” AKEL said.
The party stressed that these organisations manage critical infrastructure and public assets and therefore require capable, independent boards committed to their public character and social mission.
