AKEL has rejected DISY’s criticism of its position on energy policy, arguing that the party which governed Cyprus for a decade is in no position to “deliver lessons” on the issue.
The opposition party also reiterated its support for ending Cyprus’ energy isolation, while insisting that major infrastructure projects must be backed by transparency, evidence and safeguards for the public interest.
AKEL blames DISY for energy failures
In a statement, AKEL claimed that Cyprus remained “defenceless in energy terms” during DISY’s ten years in government.
It accused the party of responsibility for high electricity prices, distortions in energy planning, failed decisions and scandals which, according to AKEL, cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of euros.
AKEL described DISY’s latest comments as an attempt to avoid responsibility, after the party accused it of adopting contradictory positions on Cyprus’ proposed electricity interconnection.
Support for ending energy isolation
AKEL said it has consistently recognised the strategic importance of ending the country’s energy isolation.
However, it stressed that clear answers remain necessary regarding the project’s actual cost, potential risks and expected benefits for the economy and consumers.
“The strategic importance of a project does not constitute a blank cheque,” the party said, adding that transparency, proper documentation and the protection of the public interest are essential conditions for major energy projects.
AKEL concluded that if DISY considers these demands contradictory, then it has understood neither the significance of the project nor its own responsibilities in the energy sector.
