Andreas Themistocleous, president of the Democratic National Movement (DEK), has rejected allegations made by four senior party officials, insisting that their decisions are invalid and carry no institutional authority.
Speaking to politis.com.cy, Themistocleous described their stance as “a form of ingratitude” and said their decisions should be treated as though they had never been made.
Locked out of party accounts
The DEK president also claimed that he had been denied access to the party’s official digital platforms, preventing him from communicating with members and supporters.
“I have been denied access to the social media accounts, the party website, email and TikTok, as all of these are fully managed by one of the four,” he said.
Themistocleous further alleged that an “invisible far-right hand” may be behind the officials’ actions, seeking to serve political objectives ahead of the presidential election.
Responding to the accusations against him, he said the four officials were making “extreme claims” and rejected the substance of their statement.
Party meeting goes ahead
Themistocleous said the party leadership continues to function normally and confirmed that a scheduled DEK meeting was taking place on Friday. According to him, the four officials had informed the party that they would not attend.
He added that the previous meeting had unanimously approved the holding of an electoral congress, while the party’s regular congress is scheduled for early January.
The DEK president strongly criticised the four officials, describing their actions as “anti-democratic”, “Nazi” and “fascist”, and said he would not accept them.
What triggered the DEK dispute
The internal crisis erupted after vice-presidents Nikos Charalambous and Prokopis Prokopiou, general secretary Marios Thrasyvoulou and general organising secretary Andreas Sotiriou issued a joint statement withdrawing their support for Themistocleous.
The four, who describe themselves as co-founders of DEK and members of its Political Bureau, accused the president of “unconstitutional, arbitrary and non-transparent actions”, which they said had irreparably damaged their relationship of trust and cooperation.
They also claimed that the party has had no press spokesperson since 25 May 2026 and employs no salaried staff. However, a party member subsequently contacted politis.com.cy using the title of DEK press spokesperson, a role that Themistocleous also confirmed.
