An online appeal launched by journalist, researcher and author Makarios Drousiotis has attracted hundreds of contributions. By Tuesday afternoon, 724 people had donated €44,006 towards his legal defence and independent forensic examinations.
Donations rise by €8,712
The total increased by €8,712 in less than 12 hours compared with the amount recorded on Tuesday morning.
Many contributions were made anonymously, while some donors also chose to conceal the amount given. Visible donations ranged from single-digit sums to several hundred euros, with many contributors leaving messages of solidarity and support.
Campaign and legal proceedings
The GoGetFunding campaign, titled “I Am Asking for Your Help to Defend the Truth”, was created by Drousiotis in Nicosia and listed under the platform’s “Legal” category.
Drousiotis issued a public appeal on Monday, August 10, saying he faced substantial costs arising from the court proceedings against him.
According to Drousiotis, the Legal Service is referring him to the Assize Court on 80 charges linked to publications concerning the “Santis” messages case. He denies the charges and maintains that the proceedings against him are retaliatory in nature.
How the funds will be used
Drousiotis said the money raised would be used exclusively for his legal defence, independent forensic examinations and expenses associated with the court proceedings.
He also pledged to publish summary information on the contributions received and how the funds are spent.
The campaign total remains open and continues to change as further donations are made.
