AKEL has appointed Haris Polykarpou as its new spokesperson, replacing Giorgos Koukoumas, who is assuming expanded parliamentary duties.
The decision was taken by the party's Political Bureau.
Who is Haris Polykarpou?
Polykarpou, 42, was born in Nicosia and originates from Gerolakkos. He is married to Christina Nicolaou and the couple have two children.
He holds degrees in Economic Policy from the Athens University of Economics and Business and in International and European Studies from Panteion University, as well as a master's degree in Economics and Finance from Queen Mary University of London.
Longstanding AKEL figure
An economist by profession, Polykarpou currently heads AKEL's Economic Affairs Department.
He previously worked at the European Parliament as a parliamentary assistant, with responsibility for issues relating to the European economy, labour and the internal market.
Polykarpou has been a member of AKEL's Central Committee since 2016, a member of the Political Bureau since 2021, and a member of the party's Secretariat since 2025.
