The number of pre-trial detentions linked to the investigation into alleged match-fixing in Greek basketball has risen to three after former Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) president Vangelis Liolios and his close associate Giorgos Mavraganis were ordered remanded in custody.
They join former referee Petros Papapetrou, who was previously placed in pre-trial detention as part of the same case.
The decision was taken following their appearances before the investigating magistrate and prosecutor after proceedings that reportedly lasted around 12 hours in total. Both men denied all allegations against them but were nevertheless ordered into temporary detention.
Liolios denies bribery allegations
Liolios spent approximately three-and-a-half hours giving evidence in an attempt to challenge the prosecution's case, which includes allegations relating to repeated bribery offences under Greek sporting legislation.
According to reports, the former EOK president declared himself innocent and argued that he had been subjected to a campaign aimed at removing him from the federation's leadership.
As part of his defence, Liolios cited financial and tax audits which, he claimed, uncovered no evidence implicating him.
He referred specifically to an audit allegedly conducted in 2025 examining activities during 2019 and 2020.
According to his account, investigators reviewed financial records connected to:
- Promitheas Patras basketball club.
- His restaurant business activities.
- The Hellenic Basketball Federation.
The examinations reportedly included bank accounts in Greece and abroad, as well as safety deposit boxes. Liolios maintained that no improper conduct was identified during those checks.
Mavraganis also rejects accusations
The testimony of Giorgos Mavraganis lasted approximately 40 minutes.
He also denied the allegations against him despite witness statements that, according to reports, place him at the centre of activities allegedly linked to match manipulation.
Some witnesses reportedly claimed that Mavraganis acted on behalf of Liolios by conveying requests intended to influence the outcome of games.
Those claims form part of the evidence being examined by judicial authorities and do not in themselves constitute proof of guilt.
More suspects due before investigator
The next stage of the investigation is scheduled for Monday, when three additional individuals are expected to appear before the examining magistrate.
They are:
- Active referee Vasso Tsaroucha.
- Head referee Ilias Koromilas.
- Former referee Tasos Piloidis.
According to available information, all three are expected to deny the accusations against them.
