Russia and China are ready to support each other on a wide range of issues, particularly in safeguarding national sovereignty and unity, President Vladimir Putin said ahead of his visit to Beijing.
He described relations between the two countries as reaching “an unprecedented level” of mutual understanding and trust, ahead of talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Expanding cooperation
Putin said cooperation will continue on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, with both sides strengthening ties in economic, political and defence sectors.
He described the relationship as “close” and “strategic,” adding that it plays a “stabilising role” in international relations.
“We are not aligned against anyone, we are working for peace and global prosperity,” he said.
Key issues on the agenda
Talks are expected to cover the war in Ukraine, developments in the conflict involving Iran, and broader geopolitical tensions.
The leaders are also set to sign a joint declaration and around 40 bilateral agreements across sectors including industry, trade, transport and construction.
Energy pipeline plans
Among the key projects under discussion is the “Power of Siberia 2” pipeline, which would transport Russian gas to China via Mongolia.
China remains one of the main importers of Russian oil and gas.
Ongoing dialogue
The visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation between the two countries.
Further meetings between Putin and Xi are expected throughout the year alongside international summits.
