Several Lufthansa employees were injured on Thursday after the nose gear of a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner collapsed while the aircraft was parked at a gate at Frankfurt Airport, shortly before passengers were due to board.
The aircraft was scheduled to operate flight LH450 from Frankfurt to Los Angeles. Lufthansa said no passengers had boarded at the time of the incident, which occurred shortly after noon.
Only crew members and ground staff were on board when the nose gear unexpectedly retracted, causing the front of the aircraft to drop to the ground. The injured employees are receiving medical treatment, the airline said.
Emergency vehicles were seen around the aircraft, which was left partly resting on its belly at the gate.
Lufthansa said it was investigating the exact circumstances of the incident together with the relevant authorities. The flight to Los Angeles was cancelled.
The Boeing 787-9 is one of the newer long-haul aircraft in Lufthansa’s fleet, as the airline continues to modernise its operations with more fuel-efficient aircraft.
