French President Emmanuel Macron has hailed the “success” of the G7 summit held in Evian, describing it as “a moment of unity, quality discussions and genuine cooperation among the leaders gathered here”, following months of disagreements.
Speaking at a press conference, Macron said the summit had “objectively been a success”, adding that it allowed leaders to coordinate closely in responding to global crises and addressing major challenges of the time.
“This G7 was objectively a success (...) it was a moment of unity, quality discussion and genuine cooperation among the leaders gathered here,” he said, stressing that it had enabled closer coordination on urgent international issues.
Russia retreating
Leaders of the Group of Seven agreed during the summit that the balance of power in the war between Ukraine and Russia had shifted in Ukraine’s favour, the French President said.
“Ukraine is advancing, resisting, and Russia is retreating,” he stated.
Macron also emphasised what he described as the “remobilisation of the G7” to increase pressure on Russia, calling it “extremely important”.
“We have committed to increasing pressure, including strengthening our sanctions, and this remobilisation of the G7 (...) is extremely important,” he said.
On Ukraine, Macron said there was now an unprecedented level of convergence among G7 members.
“For the first time we have such convergence within the G7. And for the first time we have reached such clear conclusions,” he said.
He reiterated that renewed coordination among the group to apply pressure on Russia was essential, highlighting agreement on sanctions and broader diplomatic alignment.
The French President said the summit had enabled clearer alignment among major economies at a time of sustained geopolitical tension, particularly over the war in Ukraine, and underscored the importance of maintaining unity in future G7 efforts.
