DAMASCUS – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Syria on Saturday, according to state news agency SANA, to express support for the country's political transition following more than 13 years of conflict.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani welcomed Guterres and the delegation accompanying him at Damascus International Airport, SANA reported.
The visit comes as Syria seeks to advance its political transition after years of war that devastated large parts of the country and displaced millions of people.
It is the first visit by a UN Secretary-General to Syria since Ban Ki-moon travelled to the country in 2009.
