The earthquake struck offshore near Veraguas province as the country continues to experience strong aftershocks following last week's 7.7-magnitude quake.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Panama's Veraguas province on Monday evening, according to the country's Institute of Geosciences.

The quake occurred at 6:20pm local time (2:20am Tuesday in Cyprus) and was centred offshore, with a reported focal depth of just 2 kilometres.

Magnitude estimates varied among monitoring agencies. While Panama's Institute of Geosciences measured the earthquake at 6.4, both the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the US Geological Survey (USGS) estimated it at 6.1 magnitude.

More than 300 aftershocks

The latest tremor comes after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Panama on Friday, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency.

Authorities say more than 300 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial quake.

Damage assessment continues

No deaths have been reported so far, but officials have recorded 27 injuries and damage to around 900 homes.

The toll could change as assessments continue in remote communities affected by the seismic activity.
