Nikos Christodoulides issued a sharp response to Charles Michel on the platform X, following remarks by the former European Council president about Turkey’s role in Europe.

Michel, sharing an article he wrote for Bloomberg and addressing the President of the European Commission, described Turkey as a key NATO ally, an essential partner on migration, an important contributor to European defence and a strong regional power. He also said: “Europe will not become stronger with double standards or by oversimplifying reality.”

President cites 1974 invasion

Responding directly, President Christodoulides wrote:

“Dear Charles, since you are talking about double standards, let me remind you that Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974 and still occupies European territory.”
