Akel Announces 19 Nicosia Candidates For MP Elections

The Nicosia–Kyrenia District Electoral Conference of AKEL convened on Sunday, and elected the 18 candidates who will stand for the Nicosia seats in the upcoming parliamentary elections. 

AKEL’s General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou, is exempt from the electoral process under the Party’s Rules of Procedure.

A total of 336 delegates participated in the secret ballot. The following candidates were elected (in alphabetical order):

  1. Stefanos Stefanou – Age 60, from Gerolakkos, residing in Geri. General Secretary of AKEL and AKEL MP for Nicosia.

  2. Marina Andreou – Age 32, from Kontemenos, Kyrenia, residing in Strovolos. Social worker and visual artist. Head of AKEL’s Office for Persons with Disabilities and Vice President of the Cyprus Multiple Sclerosis Association.

  3. Marios Argyridis – Age 57, from Galata, residing in Archangelos, Lakatamia. Accountant and business consultant. Municipal Councillor in Lakatamia and President of the Board of AC OMONOIA Nicosia.

  4. Aristos Damianou – Age 53, from Famagusta, residing in Nicosia. Lawyer and legal adviser. AKEL MP for Nicosia and member of AKEL’s Central Secretariat.

  5. Eleni Evangelou – Age 37, from Farmakas, residing in Tseri. Programme Director at SYKESO and Researcher at the Prometheus Research Institute. Central Organisational Secretary of POGO and member of AKEL’s Central Committee.

  6. Thomas Thomas – Age 42, from Kalo Chorio, residing in Lakatamia. District Secretary of EKA Nicosia–Kyrenia and member of AKEL’s Central Committee. Head of the AKEL–Left–Social Alliance Municipal Group in Lakatamia.

  7. Seviros Koulas – Age 35, from Aglantzia, residing in Geri. General Secretary of EDON and member of AKEL’s Central Committee. Holds degrees in Political Science and History.

  8. Konstantinos Konstantinou – Age 46, from Akaki, residing in Aglantzia. Journalist. Editor-in-Chief and presenter of the programme 24 Hours Together. Active in volunteer and social work in Cyprus and abroad.

  9. Christina Constantinou – Age 42, from Limassol, residing in Nicosia. Actor, screenwriter, theatre workshop facilitator and teacher of Greek and speech technique for non-native speakers. Secretary of the Theatre Artists’ Sector of SIDHEKKEK-PEO.

  10. Giorgos Loukaides – Age 57, from Pyroi, Nicosia, residing in Aglantzia. AKEL Parliamentary Spokesperson and AKEL MP for Nicosia. President of the United European Left political group at the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly. Member of AKEL’s Central Secretariat.

  11. Orestis Matsas – Age 32, from Paphos, residing in Nicosia. Research Scientist in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Cyprus. Member of the nationwide Coordinating Committee of the Social Alliance.

  12. Haris Polykarpou – Age 42, from Gerolakkos, residing in Palouriotissa. Economist at AKEL’s Central Committee. Member of AKEL’s Central Secretariat and Head of the Economy Sector of the Central Committee.

  13. Marilena Trimithioti – Age 46, from Nicosia, residing in Engomi. Hospital Laboratory Officer in a public hospital. Member of AKEL’s Central Committee Health Sector. President of PASYDY’s Hospital Laboratories Branch and member of PASYDY’s General Council.

  14. Vakis Charalambous – Age 39, from and residing in Dali. Parliamentary Associate for AKEL. Member of AKEL’s Central Committee and Head of the Central Committee’s Energy Office. Holds degrees in Economics and Political Science.

  15. Dr Andri Hadjiandreou – Age 44, from and residing in Nicosia. Pianist and artist, Director of the Equality and Inclusion Centre at the University of Limassol. Piano teacher and educator at the Nicosia Music School. Cyprus’ national representative to the International Organization for Standardization on Diversity Management. Member of the Social Alliance.

  16. Avgi Chatzipavlou (Liassi) – Age 36, from and residing in Engomi. Musician and teacher of piano, voice and advanced music theory. Works in the music department of a conservatoire.

  17. Christos Christofides – Age 51, from Morphou, residing in Palouriotissa. AKEL MP for Nicosia. Member of AKEL’s Political Bureau and Head of the Central Committee’s Education Office.

  18. Konstantina Chrysanthou – Age 25, from Lapithos’ Larnakas, residing in Dali. Lawyer. Member of EDON’s Executive Council and Head of the Cultural Office of EDON’s Central Council.

  19. Ioanna Chrysovitsiotis – Age 23. Postgraduate student at the University of Oxford. Member of EDON’s Central Council and Secretariat of EDON’s Student Department. Holds a degree in Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology.

The candidates elected by the Nicosia–Kyrenia District Electoral Conference, along with those elected in the other districts, will be submitted for ratification by the Party’s Central Committee at the end of the month.
