EU Council Presidency Opening Ceremony: Parking Bans And Road Closures In Nicosia

Traffic restrictions, controlled access and a strict drone ban will be in force on Wednesday afternoon and evening around the Cyprus Theatre Organisation.

An extensive set of traffic and security measures will be implemented in Nicosia on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, due to the opening ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The event will take place at 6.30pm at the building of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation in Nicosia, with authorities urging the public to plan ahead and comply with all instructions.

Parking bans on central streets

According to a police announcement, parking will be strictly prohibited on the following streets:

  • Demostheni Severi Street
  • Griva Digeni Avenue
  • Michail Karaoli Street
  • Lordou Vyronos Street
  • Kostis Palamas Street
  • Omirou Street
  • Anastasiou Leventi Street
  • Evagorou Avenue
  • Diagorou Street
  • Vasileos Pavlou Street

In addition, the Municipality of Nicosia will not allow private vehicles to park throughout the day at the two underground parking areas of the old GSP stadium.

Road closures and controlled access

Road closures will begin from 2.30pm in the wider area surrounding the Cyprus Theatre Organisation. Access to the area will be fully controlled, with drivers requested to follow the temporary traffic arrangements and the instructions of police officers on duty.

Strict drone ban in force

It is also noted that, by decree of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works (Κ.Δ.Π. 03/2026), the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, drones, is strictly prohibited in the wider area of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation and the Conference Centre. The specific coordinates of the restricted zones are detailed in the relevant decree.

The ban on drone use will remain in force for the entire duration of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
