Drivers Be Prepared: Traffic Restrictions in Nicosia for EU Presidency Opening

Road closures, parking bans and a drone prohibition come into force ahead of the opening ceremony of Cyprus’ EU Council Presidency.

Traffic arrangements and restrictions will be implemented in Nicosia on Wednesday as police step up measures for the opening ceremony of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 6.30pm at the Cyprus Theatre Organisation, prompting a series of road closures, parking bans and security-related measures across the wider area.

Parking bans in central streets

According to a police announcement, parking will be prohibited on the following roads:

  • Demostheni Severi Street
  • Griva Digeni Avenue
  • Michail Karaoli Street
  • Lordou Vyronos Street
  • Kosti Palama Street
  • Omirou Street
  • Anastasiou Leventi Street
  • Evagorou Avenue
  • Diagorou Street
  • Vasileos Pavlou Avenue

In addition, the Municipality of Nicosia will not allow private vehicles to park throughout the day at the two underground car parks of the former GSP stadium.

Road closures from early afternoon

From 2.30pm onwards, roads around the Cyprus Theatre Organisation will be closed in stages, with access to the area fully controlled.

Police are urging drivers to comply with road closures, traffic arrangements and the instructions of officers on duty, in order to avoid congestion and delays.

Drone ban in force throughout presidency

Finally, by order of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works (K.D.P. 03/2026), the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, is strictly prohibited in the wider area of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation and the Conference Centre. The exact coordinates of the restricted zones are outlined in the relevant decree.

The drone ban will remain in force for the entire duration of Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
