Disy MP and former party leader Averof Neofytou, voiced strong concerns on Monday over the President’s stance towards the United Nations Secretary-General’s envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Neofytou argued that the President’s personal confrontation with the envoy “raises serious concerns about the outcome of the initiative of the Secretary-General himself”.

“For years we were calling on the UN Secretary-General to appoint a special envoy, and now we are describing her views as ridiculous — even through a personal statement by the President,” he wrote.

He added that, instead of promoting the opening of crossing points and preparing the ground for a new international conference on the Cyprus issue, attacks were being directed at the envoy.

Neofytou questioned whether such an approach risked leading efforts into a deadlock.

“Instead of working to open even two crossing points so that we can move towards a new international conference, we are attacking Ms Holguín. Do we not realise that this is leading us to shipwreck? What exactly are we seeking after 52 years? Instead of creating prospects for dialogue, we are entering into frontal confrontation even with the UN?” he wrote.
