A team from the Federal Bureau of Investigation is expected to arrive in Cyprus in the coming days to assist with the ongoing investigation into the “Sandy” case, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the start of a Cabinet meeting, the President said he had been briefed on the progress of the investigation, describing it as being at “a particularly advanced stage”, with systematic work and continuous evaluation of evidence.

He added that the Police are in constant contact and cooperation with Europol, particularly regarding specialised forensic examinations carried out in line with modern European standards and methods.

The President also revealed that he had contacted the US government last week to request FBI assistance, especially in analysing statements and testimonies. He said the response from Washington was immediate and positive.

“The FBI team will be in Cyprus in the coming days to assist with the ongoing investigations,” he said, noting that the agency’s expertise is expected to support the swift progress of the case.

Addressing public discussion surrounding the investigation, Christodoulides stressed that the government has demonstrated zero tolerance for issues affecting the rule of law.

He added that both he and the Cabinet bear responsibility, as custodians of the Constitution, to act with institutional seriousness and responsibility, making use of international cooperation where necessary, with the aim of fully investigating the case and strengthening public trust in institutions and justice.

He concluded by underlining that Cyprus, as a member state of the European Union, operates under a constitutional framework with functioning institutions, and that all have a duty to respect them.
