MP Candidate in Custody for Allegedly Punching Referee

The match had to be suspended and referee taken to hospital.

A 38-year-old man was placed in remanded for three days on Sunday by the Larnaca District Court following a violent incident during a football match the previous evening.

Sources said he is a candidate for the United Hunters' Party in the upcoming parliamentary elections. 

According to police, the disturbance occurred shortly before the end of the match between Rochdis Mammari and APOP, when an unknown individual threw a plastic bottle that struck the assistant referee.

Shortly afterwards, a second person entered the pitch and physically attacked the official, punching him during the confrontation.

Match suspended

The match was immediately suspended following the incident. The assistant referee was taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where he underwent medical examinations before being discharged later the same day.

As part of the investigation, police identified the man alleged to have assaulted the assistant referee. He is a 38-year-old resident of Limassol.

He was arrested under a court warrant and has been remanded in custody as inquiries continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
