Two men have been arrested and remanded in custody for resisting arrest, threatening police and trying to prevent a routine check yesterday morning.

The incident happened at 0800 on central Evagorou Avenue, downtown Nicosia, as traffic wardens were randomly flagging down cars to check on various offences.

A driver was waved to stop when he attempted an illegal overtaking manoeuvre. He subsequently stopped and as the officer reported later, the individual in question was clearly intoxicated, no less because of the strong alcohol smell.

He was asked to undergo breathalyser test, but refused and resisted arrest.

As he was arguing and gesturing to officers, a friend, riding in the front passenger seat, got out of the vehicle and attempted to prevent the arrest, by grabbing the officers' hand.

He was also arrested for obstructing police work.

During the struggle, the two men kept verbally abusing and threatening the traffic wardens.

Τhe intoxicated driver was placed in custody, with the second man taken to the Nicosia General after complaining of a leg pain.

It was established that he had suffered a fractured shin, caused after he fell to the ground with the officer, as the incident was taking place.

He is being treated at the hospital under guard, as the Nicosia CID investigates.
