Learning a new language can often be a challenge. Yet, when the process becomes fun, interactive, and tailored to the needs of children and teenagers, it transforms into an exciting journey of discovery.
This was the thinking behind the new mobile application “Μαθαίνω Ελληνικά! (Learn Greek!)”, developed by the CARDET research centre in collaboration with Frederick University and INNOVADE, under the auspices of the Cyprus Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, aims to make the Greek language accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone.
An inclusive experience
From the onset, users are greeted with the welcoming message “Feel at Home, Start with Greek!”, setting a warm and inclusive tone.
The app offers:
-
Cheerful graphics and characters that create a familiar and positive environment.
-
Separate age group options (6–12 and 13–18 years), ensuring that content is age-appropriate and relevant.
-
Gamification elements, including “Star Coins”, leaderboards, and custom avatars to boost motivation and a sense of progress.
-
Interactive games and exercises that help users connect sounds, words, and images naturally.
-
Learning levels from A1 to B2, allowing for gradual and structured skill development.
A tool for social inclusion
Beyond being a language learning platform, “Learn Greek!” has a deeper social mission. It was created to support Third Country National (TCN) students attending Cypriot schools, serving as a bridge for inclusion and empowerment.
The project is co-funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and the Republic of Cyprus, reflecting the country’s ongoing commitment to smooth and meaningful integration within the education system and society.
A spokesperson from CARDET said: “‘Learn Greek!’ is more than just a digital course. It’s a powerful tool that helps students build confidence in a new school and social environment. It also provides teachers with a modern, easy-to-use educational resource, while bringing students together through play.”
