Heavy Rain Triggers Power Cuts and Flooded Roads Across Cyprus

Yellow weather alert in force until 17:00 as Fire Service fields numerous calls in Nicosia district

Torrential rain and thunderstorms are affecting several parts of the island, causing power outages and water accumulation on the road network. Heavy downpours are reported in central Nicosia and semi-mountainous areas, with social media videos showing rain in Kornos, Saranti and Farmakas.

Yellow alert until 17:00

The Department of Meteorology’s yellow warning remains in effect until 17:00, with conditions expected to continue locally with intensity. Authorities urge the public to take extra care, avoid flooded routes and areas at risk of water accumulation.

Power outages

According to the EAC, outages were recorded between 14:19 and 14:59 in the following areas, with crews already on site for restoration:

  • Nicosia: Engomi, Psimolofou, Strovolos (Ayios Vasileios area)

  • Larnaca: Melini, Odou

Flooded roads

Police report water accumulation on parts of the road network, making driving hazardous. Drivers are advised to proceed with caution, reduce speed, keep safe following distances and switch on headlights. The public should check official Police channels for updates on weather and road conditions before travelling to avoid delays and collisions.

Fire Service: Many calls for assistance

On X, Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said the Nicosia district service is receiving numerous calls linked to the heavy rainfall. No exact incident count or details are available yet, with further information expected later today.

  • Afternoon: Partly to mostly cloudy at times, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms; hail possible in storms. Intense phenomena may occur over mountainous areas and the interior. Winds southwesterly to northwesterly light to moderate, 3-4 Beaufort, locally stronger and variable in storms. Seas generally slight to slight-moderate.

  • Tonight: Mostly cloudy at intervals with isolated showers or a thunderstorm mainly along the coasts at first; phenomena will gradually intensify with local showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly coastal. Hail possible in storms. Winds becoming mainly northwesterly to northeasterly light, 3 Beaufort. Seas calm to slight.

  • Temperatures tonight: Around 13°C inland, 15°C on the coasts, 9°C in the highest mountains.
