Cyprus is preparing for a noticeable change in weather conditions as a new system approaches from the west. Dust, increasing cloud, falling temperatures and the possibility of snow at higher altitudes will shape the weather from Friday night through the weekend.
A weak high-pressure system is temporarily affecting the region, before the incoming low-pressure system named Byron begins influencing the island from Friday evening. Dust will also be present in the atmosphere at intervals.
Today, periods of locally increased cloud are expected, with the possibility of isolated and mainly light showers. Winds will blow mainly from the northeast to southeast, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and temporarily strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort in the north, east, and south. The sea will be calm to slightly rough in the west and slightly rough elsewhere, becoming temporarily rough in the north and east. Temperatures will reach around 22 degrees inland and on the northern and eastern coasts, around 24 degrees on the southern and western coasts, and about 12 degrees in the higher mountains.
Tonight, the weather will initially be mostly clear, but cloud cover will gradually increase. Winds will remain mainly northeast to southeast, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort in windward coastal areas. The sea will generally be slightly rough, becoming temporarily rough in the north and east. Temperatures will fall to around 9 degrees inland, 14 degrees on the coasts, and 5 degrees in the higher mountains.
On Friday, the weather will start partly cloudy and at times mostly cloudy, with isolated showers expected. Gradually, conditions will turn mostly cloudy, and by the evening local rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected.
