A recent study in Cyprus has shown that drunk driving is one of the most frequent causes of fatal and other serious road accidents, along with speeding, not wearing seat belts and all in all, violating a host of fundamental regulations.
This was once again the case last night at the Akaki community, outside Nicosia, albeit and luckily, bearing much less severe repercussions, when a 35 year old man who was driving while intoxicated collided head on with a vehicle driven by a 64 year old, just before nine.
Police was called to the scene in a central area of the community. The pensioner tested 8 out of the allowed limit of 22 micrograms in a breathalyser test. The young man however had 157 micrograms in his blood, over seven times in violation of the limit.
Following treatment of minor injuries at the Nicosia General ER, the 35 year old was arrested and placed in custody, with the Peristerona police precinct investigating the cause of the accident.
