Police Investigate Inmate's Death at Nicosia Central Prisons

The justice minister has also gone to the facility while an autopsy is expected to take place in the afternoon

Police on Saturday said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 23-year-old Syrian prisoner Abdul Kader Almfalani at the Central Prisons, while Justice Minister Konstantinos Fytiris visited the facility to be briefed on the incident.

According to a police statement, at around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday, the Prisons Department informed police that a 23-year-old inmate had been found dead in his cell.

“The 23-year-old was transported by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital, where his death was confirmed,” the statement added.

Members of the Nicosia CID went to the scene, conducted examinations, and collected evidence for forensic analysis.

Fytiris also visited the Central Prisons, where he was briefed on the situation.

“The exact cause of the 23-year-old’s death is expected to be determined during the official autopsy,” police added, noting that it is scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon. Nicosia CID continues to investigate the case.
