Resignations not enough, House Speaker says.

The country's standing and credibility have taken a blow following Videogate, House Speaker Annita Demetriou said, noting the critical juncture of this development, just a few days into Cyprus' EU Presidency.

'It's not parties demanding an explanation. Civil Society is', Demetriou added.

Speaking in her dual capacity as House Speaker and Democratic Rally President, she granted that those who edited the video clearly had malicious intent and a relevant investigation must be comprehensive, but nevetherless, 'relevations are shocking and justifiably the source of anger and frustration.'

She described the Charalambous resignation and the Karsera announcement that she was stepping down from charitable organisations, as imperative, useful and in the right direction.

Demetriou stressed however that citizens are demanding a more organised plan of action, which she goes on to set up in three pillars:

1. Undertaking responsibility through specific political decisions and initiatives that will persuade the public there are no cover ups, as well as obliterate any hint of corruption or conflict of interest.

2. A comprehensive and independent investigation. The Attorney General is obliged to independently look into the video content for possible violations of relevant legislation and institutional processes.

3. Drastic changes and absolute transparency on the Student Welfare Fund and/or abolition of the Fund, finding alternative ways of supporting students.

The House Speaker said that action was needed to restore social trust, in the service of transparency and accountability.

'All institutions must move in the same direction to protect the country's credibility and interest,' she concluded.
