Auditor General Andreas Papaconstantinou is literally getting a taste of what the National Guard conscripts, but also a number of officers, are eating these days, touring camps across Cyprus to check whether the winning vendor is adhering to the terms of the catering tender.

Papaconstantinou is focusing on the food arrival, distribution and serving processes, but also quantities and perhaps most importantly temperatures and quality of food, directly connected with the health of young men currently serving their 14 months.

Ιn snap, surprise checks, he tasted more than enough servings in a number of camps and dividing line outposts, coordinating with defence ministry officials and commanders.

Long gone are the times of conscript cooks and allegations of suspect meals back in the late 80s and 90s, as the National Guard now pays four million euro a year  for military camp catering.

The Auditor General is set to continue checks over the coming days and deliver a relevant report in the near future.
