A 55-year-old worker lost his life on Wednesday afternoon in a fatal workplace accident in the Kofinou area, during unloading operations involving a heavy goods vehicle. The incident is under investigation by the Police in cooperation with the Department of Labour, while an arrest warrant for the lorry driver is being considered.

Incident details

According to the Larnaca Police, the fatal accident occurred at around 15:30. The victim, Fins Alexandru, aged 55 and a Romanian national, was employed by a private company involved in the assembly of Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) pylons.

At the time of the incident, a lorry loaded with electricity poles was in the process of unloading concrete counterweights. Alexandru was standing inside the cargo bed of the vehicle when, under circumstances that are still being investigated, the lorry tilted to the right. As a result of the overturning, the worker sustained fatal injuries.

Emergency response and on-site investigation

Members of the Police were immediately dispatched to the scene following the incident. Examinations were carried out at the site to document the conditions under which the accident occurred, while initial evidence was secured as part of the investigation.

Institutional involvement

The case is being investigated jointly by the Police and the Department of Labour, in line with procedures applicable to fatal workplace accidents. The authorities are examining compliance with occupational safety regulations and the circumstances surrounding the unloading operation.

According to the Police, an application will be submitted for the issuance of an arrest warrant against the driver of the lorry. This step forms part of the ongoing investigation into potential responsibilities linked to the fatal incident.
