Heart Disease and Cancer Leading Causes of Death in North

New statistics published by Turkish Cypriot media show that the biggest threats to public health remain cardiovascular diseases and cancer, while road deaths on the rise.

Cardiovascular diseases and cancer remain the biggest threats to public health, according to new data released by the statistics institute in the north. The figures show that nearly one in two deaths is attributed to heart‑related conditions, followed by neoplastic diseases and respiratory illnesses.

According to a report published on Sunday by Yeni Bakış, of the 1,745 deaths recorded in the north in 2024, 891 deaths (46.4%) were due to circulatory system diseases.

The report highlights the persistent nature of the problem, noting that during the period 2019–2024, out of a total of 9,767 deaths, 4,598 were caused by heart‑related conditions.

At the same time, cancer accounts for 12.9% of deaths, while particular concern arises from a 10.6% increase in deaths caused by external factors, such as road accidents.
