Limassol has been named one of three finalists across Europe for the European Mobility Week Award, one of the continent’s most prominent distinctions in the field of sustainable mobility.

The Cypriot city is competing in the main category, which evaluates the overall programme of activities organised during European Mobility Week. Limassol stands alongside Innsbruck, Austria, and Riga, Latvia. A separate category, focused on a single flagship initiative, features entries from Turkey and Italy.

The final evaluation and announcement of the winner will take place in March 2026 in Brussels during an official European ceremony.

Recognition for inclusive public space

According to the award’s official platform, Limassol was recognised for its creative and inclusive approach to sustainable mobility. Particular emphasis was placed on the temporary transformation of Ankara Street and Castle Square into a 6,000-square-metre car-free zone. The space hosted family cycling events, art workshops, inclusive sports activities and mobility-themed treasure hunts.

Special mention was also made of one of the municipality’s largest projects inaugurated during the week: the coastal pedestrian and cycling route along Aktai Odos. The project was highlighted for reconnecting Limassol’s seafront at relatively low cost, creating a new accessible public space for families, children and persons with disabilities who previously faced difficulties crossing the area.

Collaboration at the core

Collaboration was a key element of this year’s nomination. The Municipality of Limassol partnered closely with civil society organisations, including Friends of the Earth Cyprus and the Organization for Positive Urbanism (OPU), which co-organised several activities. Additional support came from Nextbike, MaasLab, Kyklodromio, EMEL and the Limassol Cycling Club, all of which contributed to public participation and the overall success of the programme.

In a statement, the Municipality of Limassol said the recognition reflects not only a successful event but also the city’s broader strategic trajectory towards sustainable mobility and climate neutrality.

“Through targeted interventions, partnerships and participatory processes, Limassol is strengthening its role as a model city and point of reference for other European cities,” the municipality said.
