The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment has rejected allegations by environmental organisations of violations and inaction in the management of the Akamas National Forest Park. In a statement, the Ministry described the protection of the area as a “non-negotiable priority” and stressed that efforts are ongoing to address long-standing issues related to the park’s management.

Balancing protection, safety and access

Responding to claims of inactivity, the Ministry said the management of Akamas takes place within a complex framework that requires balancing environmental protection, public safety and operational needs. It underlined that its actions are guided by clear priorities, including safeguarding ecological integrity, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, and strengthening fire protection and emergency response capabilities. The government’s broader plan for the organised operation of the park and controlled access remains in progress.

Road works limited to essential safety needs

Addressing concerns over interventions in the road network, particularly along the Baths of Aphrodite–Fontana Amorosa route, the Ministry clarified that any works are strictly limited to what is necessary. It stressed that interventions are not aimed at extensive upgrades, but rather at ensuring safe movement, access for emergency vehicles and effective fire protection, while taking into account the environmentally sensitive nature of the area.

The Ministry said that the full operational organisation of the Akamas National Forest Park, including a comprehensive access management system, remains under development. The objective is to move beyond the current transitional phase without allowing it to become permanent.

Dialogue with stakeholders

Officials acknowledged the role of environmental organisations in the public debate and said they have been invited to a meeting to discuss the Ministry’s plans and exchange views. Separate discussions have also been scheduled with local authorities as part of ongoing consultations.

The Ministry reiterated that it will continue its work with institutional responsibility and a focus on the public interest, aiming to protect the environment while ensuring public safety and effective fire prevention measures.
