In its statement, the Department of Forests of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment said that following an incident on March 25, 2026 involving hikers who became trapped inside Avakas Gorge, the public is informed that the site will remain closed until further notice.
The decision is due to weather conditions, increased water flow, slippery terrain and the risk of falling rocks and soil masses. For these reasons, the Avakas Gorge trail in the Akamas National Forest Park will continue to remain closed.
A related announcement had already been issued to inform the public, effective from December 6, 2025, until it is determined that the danger to visitors has completely passed. Warning and prohibition signs were also placed at the entrance to the gorge.
The Department of Forests apologises for any inconvenience caused to the public, but stresses that the closure is necessary for visitor safety.
A new announcement will be issued once the gorge is considered completely safe for visits.
