Cyprus has introduced precautionary public health measures, including free vaccinations, following a cluster of meningococcal disease type B (MenB) cases reported in the United Kingdom among university students.
The Ministry of Health said the move comes after updates from the UK Health Security Agency regarding an outbreak centred on students in Canterbury, Kent, particularly within the University of Kent community.
Spread across halls of residence
According to British health authorities, the cases were mainly identified among students living in halls of residence and maintaining close social contact, conditions which increase the risk of transmission of the meningococcus bacterium.
UK officials responded by activating established protocols, including chemoprophylaxis and a targeted vaccination campaign against meningitis B, with a focus on students in shared accommodation. Students attending or planning to attend the University of Kent have also been urged to follow public health guidance.
In light of the high mobility of students between Cyprus and the UK, Cypriot authorities have decided to implement similar measures domestically. Free MenB vaccinations are being offered to students associated with the University of Kent, including those preparing to travel for studies as well as those currently in Cyprus after returning from the UK.
Measures across Cyprus
Vaccination will be provided upon presentation of a valid student ID or proof of enrolment, ensuring targeted coverage for individuals who may have been exposed or are at increased risk. Appointments must be arranged in advance by telephone.
In Nicosia, vaccinations are available at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital and the Adult and Travel Vaccination Centre in Latsia. In Larnaca, services are offered at Larnaca General Hospital, while in Limassol they are carried out at Limassol Old Hospital.
In Paphos, vaccinations are administered at Paphos General Hospital and at the Polis Chrysochous Health Centre on a weekly basis every Tuesday. For the Famagusta district, services are provided at the Famagusta Health Centre.
The Ministry of Health stressed that strengthening prevention remains a key tool in protecting public health and safeguarding student wellbeing.
