We discovered “Sofoklis” a few days after its quiet online premiere, and it is already unfolding as one of the most intriguing recent Cypriot productions. Released on YouTube to coincide with the anniversary of the opening of the island’s crossing points in 2003, the film is being presented in parts, with two episodes now available.
A story shaped by memory
Created by Evren Maner, who signs the script, direction, editing and music, “Sofoklis” follows an elderly man returning to his village after decades of separation. The journey is less about reclaiming what was lost and more about facing what remains.
The narrative moves through themes of memory, division and personal reckoning, grounded in a setting that carries strong emotional weight.
A different kind of release
Rather than opting for a traditional cinema rollout, the creators have chosen a gradual, episodic release online. The first episode, titled “The Arrival”, sets the tone, while the second begins to expand the film’s emotional and narrative landscape.
This structure allows the story to breathe, offering viewers time to reflect between chapters rather than consuming the work in a single sitting.
A collaborative effort
“Sofoklis” is a fully independent production, bringing together Greek-speaking and Turkish-speaking Cypriots in a shared creative process. By making the film freely accessible online, the team aims to open space for dialogue and connection across communities.
At this stage, with two episodes available, the film is already establishing a distinct rhythm, one that invites viewers to follow its progression step by step.
