Bulgaria secures its historic first Eurovision victory in Vienna following a four-year absence from the competition.

The Bulgarian representative, Dara, fully validated her status as the pre-tournament favorite by securing first place in the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2026. Performing her high-energy track "Bangaranga" in Vienna, Austria, the 27-year-old pop star made history by delivering the Balkan nation its first-ever victory in the long-running European musical competition.

From Varna folklore student to pop icon

The singer, whose legal name is Darina Nikolaeva Yotova, dominated the scoreboard by claiming the top spot in both the professional national juries and the global public televote. Accepting the iconic glass microphone trophy on stage, an emotional Dara expressed her profound gratitude to the millions of viewers who backed her performance.

Born on 9 September 1998 in the coastal city of Varna, Dara initially trained in traditional Bulgarian folk singing at the Dobri Hristov National School of Arts. She first entered the national spotlight in 2015 as a 16-year-old contestant on X Factor Bulgaria, where she finished in third place.

Shortly after her reality television debut, she adopted the mononym DARA and released her debut commercial single, "K’vo Ne Chu", which rapidly ascended to the peak of the domestic music charts. A succession of radio hits followed, including "Thunder", "Call Me", and "Mr. Rover", establishing her as one of Bulgaria's most successful contemporary pop exports with millions of digital streams.

Professional milestones and advocacy

By 2018, Dara was named Best Female Artist at the BG Radio Music Awards, and in 2021, she became the youngest judge and coach in the history of The Voice Bulgaria. Demonstrating her keen eye for talent, she led contestants from her team to absolute victory twice, in the 2022 and 2024 seasons of the reality franchise. She also expanded her television presence by reaching the finals of the Bulgarian edition of Dancing Stars in 2024.

A significant milestone in her artistic development occurred in 2025 with the release of her studio album, "ADHDARA". The title represents a deliberate play on her name and her adult diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD), a condition she chose to discuss openly in the public sphere to combat societal stigma. In interviews surrounding the release, she embraced her neurodivergence, framing it as an inseparable and driving component of her personal and creative identity.

Folklore meets contemporary production

Bulgaria’s participation in the 2026 contest carried considerable symbolic weight, marking the country's official return to the Eurovision stage following a continuous absence since 2022, primarily driven by financial constraints faced by the national broadcaster.

The winning entry, "Bangaranga", derives its title from Jamaican patois slang denoting a chaotic yet festive outburst. However, Dara revealed that the core creative inspiration for the track is deeply rooted in the ancient Bulgarian folklore tradition of the Kukeri. This pagan ritual features performers wearing elaborate, intimidating masks and heavy bells who dance rhythmically to dispel evil spirits through intense percussion and sound.

With her landmark victory in Vienna, Dara succeeds the Austrian artist JJ, who won the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest for the host nation with the pop ballad "Wasted Love".
