Doctors Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka are expected to appear before an investigating judge to present their account of the events preceding Giorgos Mazonakis’s death.
The pair now face a serious felony charge after initially providing statements as witnesses, according to Proto Thema.
Doctor to address conflicting statements
Gaka is expected to explain discrepancies identified in her initial statements, attributing them to the panic that followed the singer’s collapse.
She reportedly rejects any suggestion that she acted with intent in her handling of the incident.
Her husband and co-defendant, Theodoropoulos, maintains that he was not involved in the events. According to Proto Thema, he claims that he had other scheduled appointments that day and was away from the practice for lunch when he was informed of what had happened.
From witnesses to defendants
The couple gave their initial statements while they were still being treated as witnesses.
Following the criminal proceedings brought against them, they are now required to provide explanations as defendants in the case.
Post-mortem report still pending
According to the report, the forensic findings from the post-mortem examination have not yet been included in the case file.
Authorities are expected to assess all the evidence gathered to establish the exact cause of Mazonakis’s death and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Doctors’ claims over medical equipment
The defendants also reportedly maintain that the equipment used at the practice had been declared to the Athens Medical Association.
According to information cited by Proto Thema, the first machine was registered in 2025 and was subsequently inspected, while a second machine was declared in 2026. A further inspection of the premises had also reportedly been scheduled.
Family requests further investigation
Mazonakis’s family has requested a series of investigative measures, including access to telephone records, a transcript of the call made to Greece’s emergency medical service, EKAB, and the submission of the singer’s complete medical file.
The family is also considering requesting that the charge be upgraded to homicide with possible intent.
