Open-air screenings return this summer with Greek, Cypriot, international and children’s films, offering affordable entertainment and cool evenings in the capital and coastal cities.
In Nicosia, the Summer Screenings Marathon at the historic “Constantia” cinema has become a staple event. Organized by Theatre Ena in collaboration with the Deputy Ministry of Culture, the festival draws large audiences. “Attendance this year is much higher, we’re nearly full every night,” said Andreas Christodoulides, director of Theatre Ena, speaking to CNA.
The program, running until 7 September, includes Africa Star, The Return, Honeyland, No Other Land, Rams, La Piscine, All Shall Be Well, Crossing, Lars is LOL, Tatami, Sew Torn, Murina, and Les Indésirables. Tickets cost €5, with screenings five nights a week at 21:00.
Christodoulides noted that while the Constantia cinema is in need of major restoration, it cannot be funded by the state since it is not owned by the Deputy Ministry. “We maintain it with great effort each year, but a full renovation would cost a fortune,” he said.
Larnaca joins the scene for the first time with the Larnaca Film Festival (28–31 August), organized by the city’s film club with municipal and state support. The lineup includes Paola Cortellesi’s C’è ancora domani, Emmanuel Courcol’s En Fanfare, Danae Stylianou’s Skammata, and a series of Cypriot short films. Admission is free, with screenings starting at 20:30, followed by short discussions.
Coastal cities are also embracing summer cinema. In Limassol, the Starlit Screens return to Agios Tychonas beach until 24 August, featuring Disney favorites like Finding Dory, Cruella, and Encanto, along with the Oscar-winning Coda. The same program runs at Ayia Napa Marina, with tickets priced at €12 (including popcorn and water) or €35 for families.
In Paphos, the Petridio Foundation and the Municipal Youth Council will host an open-air screening of Night at the Museum on Venus Bleu beach on 21 August, with a minimum donation of €5 to charity. Polis Chrysochous also held three screenings this summer, marking its second year of outdoor cinema events.
