Ongoing instability in the Middle East is taking a serious toll on the tourism sector, with hotel occupancy already showing a noticeable decline, according to the Federation of Hotel, Catering and Leisure Centre Employees.

In a statement, the union warned of risks to both the viability of businesses and the protection of jobs in the coming months.

“We express our strong concern and call on the government to take immediate and substantive measures,” it said.

The union stressed the need to extend the period during which support measures apply, with particular emphasis on wage subsidies for May and June, in order to protect employees and support businesses in the sector where a documented need exists.

It also said the government must act without delay and apply immediately to the European Support Fund, with the aim of securing financial assistance to strengthen the tourism sector, safeguard jobs and prevent possible negative developments.
