Makis Keravnos said on Tuesday that blanket measures on foreclosures, including a general freeze, should not be discussed at this stage. The remarks followed a meeting with a delegation from Democratic Rally (DISY), led by party president Annita Demetriou.
Keravnos stressed that any decisions taken on foreclosures must be reasonable and should not create additional problems.
“We are being monitored by rating agencies, by the European Union and by the institutions from which we have borrowed and which evaluate us,” he said. “In this context, horizontal measures regarding foreclosures, such as a freeze during this period, should not be discussed,” he added.
Strengthening existing framework
The minister emphasised the need to reinforce the current institutional framework.
“We must strengthen the existing framework. We must reinforce the Financial Ombudsman so that we can resolve issues without putting our economy at risk,” he said.
Keravnos also noted that authorities are running daily scenarios to assess potential economic impacts stemming from developments in the region.
Referring to foot-and-mouth disease, he underlined the need for immediate and decisive measures to reduce any potential threat.
