“The cleaning out of the Police Force is progressing alongside its effectiveness in combating crime and illegality. This is how citizens’ trust in the Police is strengthened,” said Justice Minister Costas Fytiris in response to the arrest of two police officers.

The comments relate to the arrest of a police constable in Larnaca and a special police officer in Paphos in connection with charges of alleged assault and beating.

The minister added that the cases are being investigated by the competent authorities with a view to bringing them before the courts.

Fytiris stressed that the State remains determined to proceed consistently both in strengthening discipline and accountability, as well as further enhancing the Police Force’s operational effectiveness in the fight against crime.

Behaviours incompatible with the principles and mission of the Force are not tolerated and are dealt with within the framework of the law, he noted.

At the same time, the Minister congratulated the police for striking significant blows against illegality and all forms of criminal activity in recent months. He emphasised that the great majority of police officers perform their duties daily with professionalism, responsibility, and a sense of duty.

Consistency in upholding the rule of law and strengthening police effectiveness remain key priorities, with the aim of further reinforcing public trust, he said.
