The Ministry of Finance is allocating €55 million through the Thaleia 2021–2027 Cohesion Policy Programme to create and upgrade parks island-wide. The General Directorate for Development says the aim is to deliver safe, functional and eco-friendly spaces that promote relaxation, social interaction and a closer link with nature while supporting sustainable mobility.

Why it matters

Officials describe the parks as anchors for greener development and community life, helping reduce stress in fast-paced urban centres and strengthening social cohesion among residents and families.

Projects are co-funded by the European Union, the national budget and local authorities.

Flagship and ongoing projects

Nicosia: The Old GSP Stadium has been redesigned as a major green and recreation area, completed in early 2025 with a €27.3 million budget. An Environmental Awareness Linear Park along the Yialias River is budgeted at €5.6 million.

Larnaca: Works include the redesign of Patticheio Park (€6.6 million), development of Salina Municipal Park (€3.2 million) and a Multifunctional Park in Tsiakkilero (€2.3 million).

Limassol: A neighbourhood park on Goguen Street was completed in August 2024 (€2.3 million) and another near Aetos Stadium in May 2025 (€1.1 million).

Famagusta district: An Urban Multifunctional Park in Ayia Napa (€4.3 million), a Sports and Wellness Park in Sotira (€0.9 million) and a Linear Park in Acheritou (€1 million) are progressing.

The expected impact

Beyond adding trees, paths and play areas, the programme prioritises access, safety and links to walking and cycling routes, with the goal of making greener, healthier neighbourhoods the new norm across Cyprus.
