Iran sees “no reason” to negotiate with the United States, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview broadcast on Sunday, rejecting remarks by US President Donald Trump that Tehran wants to reach an agreement to end the war.
Tehran rejects negotiation claims
Speaking on the CBS programme Face the Nation, Araghchi said Iran has no incentive to enter discussions with Washington.
“We see no reason to negotiate with the Americans, because we were in talks with them when they decided to attack us, and this was the second time this happened,” he said.
The Iranian minister was referring to a US military operation carried out in June 2025, during a period when negotiations between Washington and Tehran were under way.
Iran says it did not seek ceasefire
Araghchi also rejected suggestions that Iran had requested a ceasefire or negotiations following the outbreak of the war. “We never asked for a ceasefire and we never asked for negotiations,” he said, referring to the conflict launched on 28 February by Israel and the United States against Iran.
Trump comments on possible agreement
US President Donald Trump recently told the American network NBC that Iran is interested in reaching a deal. “Iran wants to make a deal and I do not want to do it yet, because the terms of the agreement are not good enough,” Trump said.
Limited passage through Strait of Hormuz
Araghchi also confirmed that Iran is prepared to allow ships from certain countries to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.“Countries have contacted us that want safe passage for their ships,” he said, without specifying which nations had made the request.
