The chief engineer of the Greek-owned bulk carrier Minoan Dignity was killed after the vessel was struck by a projectile of unknown origin while leaving the Strait of Hormuz.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Tuesday it had received a report of a vessel being hit, causing damage to its engine room. Maritime security sources identified the vessel to Reuters as the Liberian-flagged Minoan Dignity.

Crew Assisted by Oman Coast Guard

The sources said the crew member killed in the attack was the vessel’s chief engineer. The remaining crew received assistance from Oman’s coast guard, according to UKMTO.

No environmental impact was reported. Authorities are investigating the incident and the origin of the projectile.
