Cypriot police have detaned a suspected Hamas member wanted in Germany for procuring weapons ‌and ammunition for attacks on Israeli or Jewish facilities, German federal prosecutors said on Tuesday.

According to Reuters, the Lebanese-born suspect, identified only as Kamel M, was detained at Cyprus' Larnaca airport on March 6, arriving from Lebanon.

German prosecutors said the suspect is wanted in connection with the transport of 300 rounds of live ammunition, though they did not make clear in their statement the origin or intended destination of the rounds.

"The operation served as preparation for deadly Hamas attacks on Israeli or Jewish institutions inGermany and Europe," said the prosecutors.

Reuters reported that German police also searched the suspect's apartment in Berlin. The next step now is for the suspect's extradition to Germany, where a judge will decide on pre-trial detention, the statement said.
