The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, placed Cyprus at the centre of the European Union’s security framework during the European Council press conference, stating that the island has been “impacted by this war more than any other member state.”
Security of Cyprus framed as EU priority
“We have strengthened our partnerships with the neighbours in the region, and most importantly we are united as Europeans, we know that when we act together, we are stronger,” she said.
She added that “Cyprus has been impacted by this war more than any other member state and we send a clear, united signal: the security of Cyprus is the security of the European Union.”
Reference to Christodoulides and upcoming visit
Von der Leyen also referred to the handling of the situation by President Nikos Christodoulides, stating that she “commend[s] the President’s handling of the situation and the Presidency which continues delivering.”
She further noted that “as President Christodoulides has said, there is normality and safety in Cyprus,” adding that she is “very much looking forward to being there in April for the informal European.”
Government reaction
Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis highlighted the statement in a social media post, drawing attention to the acknowledgment of Cyprus’ role within the current regional developments.
