The Republic of Cyprus will be present at the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit, where a landmark agreement on a Gaza ceasefire and the release of hostages is due to be signed. President Nikos Christodoulides departs for Egypt today at the invitation of the Presidents of the United States and Egypt.
Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said Cyprus’s participation “is clear recognition of our country’s upgraded role as a reliable interlocutor and a bridge of cooperation between Europe and the Middle East.”
A landmark accord to end the war
Nicosia is describing the agreement set to be signed in Sharm el-Sheikh as a historic step toward ending a tragedy that has shocked the world and as a moment that revives hope for peace and stability in the Middle East.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 15:00 with a welcome for leaders by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the traditional family photo. At 15:05, the “Sharm el-Sheikh Agreement to End the War in Gaza” will be signed, followed immediately by the opening session of the summit with remarks by the Presidents of Egypt and the United States.
International recognition of Cyprus’s role
Cyprus is among the European states jointly invited by Presidents Trump and Sisi to attend the signing. The spokesman’s statement notes that this “confirms international appreciation for Cyprus’s contribution to regional humanitarian and diplomatic initiatives, particularly through the Amalthea Initiative.”
President Christodoulides’s presence underscores what Mr Letymbiotis called “a coherent and responsible foreign policy that has strengthened Cyprus’s diplomatic footprint internationally through relationships of trust and consistency.”
The European dimension and the day after
The European Union is expected to play a key role in implementing the agreement and in the next phase, which will focus on humanitarian and development support for Gaza. According to the statement, “Cyprus, due to its geographic proximity and operational capacity, can serve as a natural bridge for European action in the region, especially ahead of Cyprus’s EU Council Presidency in 2026.”
Leaders from the United States, Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, France, Greece, Germany, Italy, India, Pakistan and Indonesia are expected at the ceremony, along with the President of the European Council, the UN Secretary-General and the Secretary-General of the Arab League.
President Christodoulides will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos, the Government Spokesman, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, the Director of the President’s Diplomatic Office Doros Venezis and senior officials.
