Civil defence says a school sheltering displaced families was hit as Israel claims troops fired at “suspects”

Five people were killed on Friday when an Israeli strike hit a school in Gaza City that had been converted into a shelter for displaced residents, according to the civil defence authorities in the Gaza Strip.

Mahmoud Basal, a spokesperson for Gaza’s civil defence, told Agence France-Presse that rescuers recovered five bodies from the School of the Martyrs in the Tuffah neighbourhood in eastern Gaza City, following what he described as a bombing.

Responding to AFP, the Israeli military said soldiers had opened fire on what they called “suspect individuals” in order to neutralise a threat. The army added that it was aware of reports of casualties and that the incident was under investigation.
