Recent reports by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Cyprus were the focus of a briefing by Hasim Diab, the Secretary-General's Special Representative and head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), during closed consultations of the UN Security Council in New York on Thursday.
According to CNA information, the briefing, which lasted approximately one and a half hours, highlighted the extensive efforts of María Ángela Holguín, the Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, to engage both sides in intensive contacts aimed at creating the conditions for the resumption of negotiations.
European members of the Security Council, including France, Latvia, Greece and Denmark, as well as the United States, reportedly expressed support for a solution based on the agreed framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.
Meanwhile, Pakistan and Somalia reportedly referred to "economic inequalities" and "conditions of isolation" affecting the Turkish Cypriot community on the island.
