A meeting of Cyprus's National Council concluded on Friday under President Nikos Christodoulides, ahead of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres's visit to the island from 27 to 29 July. During the session, Christodoulides briefed the parliamentary parties on developments just 24 hours before Guterres's arrival.
On Tuesday morning, the UN chief is expected to hold separate meetings with the two community leaders, followed by a joint dinner that evening. A joint meeting is scheduled for Wednesday morning, after which Guterres will give a press conference.
Meanwhile, President Christodoulides travels to Athens on Saturday, where he will exchange views and coordinate positions with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Following his talks with Mitsotakis, a meeting with Raffaele Fitto, the European Commission's special representative on the Cyprus problem, has not been ruled out. A meeting with María Ángela Holguín, the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy, is also considered likely. Holguín is expected to hold a critical one-on-one meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Friday.
