The upcoming visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres is dominating the front pages of the Turkish Cypriot press, with newspapers offering differing interpretations of its significance, the prospects for renewed negotiations and the obstacles facing the Cyprus issue.
Several publications highlight legal proceedings related to the alleged usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties in the north as a factor weighing on the climate ahead of any new diplomatic initiative. Others focus on potential confidence-building measures, the possibility of a new 5+1 informal conference and the meetings Guterres will hold with the two leaders.
‘Federalists divided’
Avrupa ("Europe") leads with the headline "Federalists Divided," focusing on separate events planned to coincide with Guterres' visit.
The newspaper reports that the bicommunal initiative Peace – United Cyprus will hold a gathering in the buffer zone outside Ledra Palace and the Home for Cooperation on Tuesday evening to welcome the UN chief and convey support for a federal solution.
According to the paper, other organisations, trade unions and political parties that will not participate in the joint event with Greek Cypriots are planning separate demonstrations across the north earlier in the day under an initiative led by the Republican Turkish Party (CTP).
‘Guterres sets the table’
Halkın Sesi carries the headline "Guterres Sets the Table," portraying the visit as an effort to create conditions for a new negotiating process.
The newspaper notes that Guterres' three-day visit is the first by a UN secretary-general to Cyprus since Ban Ki-moon's visit in 2010.
According to the report, Guterres is expected to hold separate meetings with Tufan Erhürman and President Nikos Christodoulides, before the three meet together on Wednesday.
The paper refers to claims that confidence-building measures involving Varosha, Morphou, Famagusta port and Tymbou airport may be discussed.
It also cites reports suggesting Guterres could present a framework for a "strategic agreement" including a bizonal federation, a two-year negotiation timetable and troop withdrawals. According to the newspaper, the UN chief's primary objective is to pave the way for a new informal 5+1 conference.
‘We are ready’
Diyalog leads with the single-word headline "Ready," highlighting Erhürman's statement that preparations and consultations ahead of Guterres' visit have been completed.
The newspaper presents the Turkish Cypriot side as sending a positive message ahead of this week's contacts and expressing readiness for any process that may emerge.
It also highlights Monday's meeting between UN envoy María Ángela Holguín and Erhürman.
A similar approach is taken by Yeni Düzen, whose headline reads "We Are Ready."
The newspaper prominently features Erhürman's statement that the Turkish Cypriot side has completed its preparations and is ready to enter a new phase in the Cyprus process.
It also carries comments from CTP leader Sıla Usar İncirli, who said Guterres' visit should mark the beginning of a path leading to negotiations and eventually a settlement.
Property issue remains a key concern
Havadis publishes the headline "Guterres on the Agenda" and examines the visit through three themes: preparations by the Turkish Cypriot side, property disputes and changing international dynamics.
The paper notes Erhürman's assertion that consultations have been completed and argues that the Turkish Cypriot side enters this period better prepared.
It also identifies legal actions against individuals accused of exploiting Greek Cypriot properties in the north as one of the major issues hanging over the visit.

‘Last tango with Guterres’
Yeni Bakış opts for the headline "Last Tango with Guterres," emphasising that the UN secretary-general's term expires at the end of the year.
The publication describes the visit as potentially one of Guterres' final personal efforts to generate momentum on the Cyprus issue and assesses whether sufficient common ground exists for meaningful follow-up.
Meanwhile, Kıbrıs focuses primarily on the property issue, arguing that while the United Nations is attempting to revive the process, the Greek Cypriot side is accelerating court actions and arrest warrants relating to Greek Cypriot properties in the north.
The newspaper also highlights Erhürman's statements that he is prepared for the visit and any developments that may follow.
