The European Commission has denied reports that its Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms, Raffaele Fitto, has scheduled meetings in Athens and Ankara, according to a Commission spokesperson.
Fitto was appointed by the European Commission in July as its special representative for Cyprus, tasked with contributing to UN-led efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.
According to the Commission, Fitto's upcoming programme consists of previously announced visits and meetings in Portugal and Italy.
The European Commission's official calendar shows that Fitto will be in Madeira on 17 September, where he is due to meet Madeira Regional Government President Miguel Albuquerque, other regional government representatives and Paulo Barreto, the Republic's representative for the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
He is also scheduled to visit Curral das Freiras as part of the "Right to Stay" initiative and tour the IA DataMentors project, which is funded through the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
On 18 September, Fitto is due to travel to Italy, where he will participate in an event on EU enlargement in Lecce organised by the Municipality of Lecce and the Organisation for Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Heritage.
He will then travel to Rome to attend the Fenix event.
According to the agenda published by the Commission, Fitto's next scheduled engagement is an Implementation Dialogue on the "Right to Stay" initiative, set to take place in Brussels on 29 September.
Earlier in the day, CNA had cited “well-informed sources” saying that Fitto would be visiting Athens and Ankara in the coming days.
